DVEO Launches Price Competitive 4K Ultra HD H.265/HEVC Live Video Decoder & Server for Video Walls, Digital Signage, Broadcast Testing, and Post-Production

San Diego, California — DVEO®, a well respected supplier to leading telco TV/OTT and cable operators around the world, will demonstrate their new H.265/HEVC 4K Ultra HD video player at the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) in Amsterdam, September 15-19, at Stand 2.A34.

Now shipping, the Mavio™ 4K IP/IP: HEVC Live Out can be used as a single channel live HEVC 4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160 resolution) video player or a 4 channel Full HD video player. It ingests HD or H.265 based 4K compressed video files on to its local hard drive via Gigabit Ethernet or a USB port. Output for UHD is delivered via the built-in HDMI port, with multiple output frame rates up to 30 fps.

“The Mavio decodes live streams and plays back directly from stored compressed files in real time, with 10-bit color depth for High Dynamic Range content,” stated Laszlo Zoltan, Vice President of DVEO. “It stores content in a compressed form, although playout is always uncompressed.”

Broadband Satellites to Deliver OTT VOD and Linear TV Channels in Guyana -- Brings New Streaming Content Service to Market within 48 Hours

Toronto, Canada – Broadband Satellites has launched a new streaming content service market in Guyana for a potential customer base of around 200,000 active internet subscribers and 450,000 smartphone users across the country.

The new service will offer video-on-demand (VOD) and linear TV channels, and was based on innovative OTT online video platform technology from SotalCloud. This technology enabled Broadband Satellites to develop the service from proof-of-concept, through customization to live web apps within 48 hours.

Broadband Satellites now has comprehensive VOD libraries uploaded and will be piloting the service using local linear TV channels in Guyana.

Brian Yong, CEO and CTO at Broadband Satellites said: “There is a large and untapped audience for delivering video and musical content via internet-based channels. We considered this opportunity and began to explore the technological possibilities required to set up such a service.

“SotalCloud gave us free access to a proof-of-concept instance of their platform and after a couple of hours of customization, we had our first iOS, Android and web apps working. After initially contracting with a number of vendors for our OTT deployment, we could immediately see the potential from this new solution and it’s unbelievable that we could get it working within the first two hours of trying after more than six months of no progress.

DVEO to Highlight Streaming Solutions at VidTrans 2017 -- Including Packet Recovery Technology, Servers with Live Time Shift, Adaptive Optimized Transcoders, and More

Also at VidTrans, Sergio Ammirata, Ph.D., CTO of DVEO, will be a speaker at the conference, with his presentation titled “Professional Media Transport over Packetized Networks” on Wednesday, March 1.  The presentation will describe how UDP in combination with Selective Repeat/Selective Reject ARQ (Automatic Repeat reQuest) enables reliable media transport over packetized networks.

1.  UDP Packet Recovery Technology for Public or Private Internet — DOZER ARQ
DVEO’s patented DOZER ARQ (Automatic Repeat Request) Automated Packet Recovery technology ensures packet loss free real time video delivery over IP networks including wireless and the Internet.  It automatically fixes UDP packet loss and achieves extremely high quality, low-latency, and error-free real-time video transport over IP.

The DOZER technology is available as a compact stand-alone product — DOZERbox™ IP/IP + AES128, a one RU system — DOZER Racks IP/IP.  A software license — the DOZER ARQ: LIC — is offered for third-party integration into all kinds of IP video distribution products including encoders/transcoders, streamers, media servers, receivers, CDN and network equipment, VoIP and video conferencing appliances, and multi-player games devices.

3.  Telco Oriented High Availability Transcoders — Brutus VI IP/IP: TELCO, and more
DVEO’s Brutus adaptive optimized transcoders are ideal for simple transcoding or grooming at headends for OTT, mobile, and Telco TV multiscreen services.

The Brutus VI IP/IP: TELCO is an adaptive optimized transcoder.  Typical real time H.264 transcodes benchmarks include 200 SD streams, or 75 each 720p60 streams, or 50 each 1080p/i streams.  Other Brutus systems serve anywhere from 20 to 160 SD streams out.  Optional H.265/HEVC transcoding is available.

4.  Multichannel Transcoders with Built-in 8VSB Tuners — Gearbox II
The Gearbox II 8VSB 16 Tuners/IP 80ch streamer/transcoder receives up to sixteen 8VSB signals and transforms them into IP streams that are optimized for streaming.  Typical dedicated H.264 transcodes are up to 80 SD streams, or 20 1080i/p streams, or 30 720p60 streams.  When combined with ATLAS server applications, the system creates an all-in-one video delivery system that creates DASH or HLS streams and sends them to viewers’ OTT devices like Roku®.  Gearbox II systems are available for all major video formats — QAM, DVB-S-S2, etc.  Optional H.265/HEVC transcoding is available.

5.  Compact Low Latency H.264 Encoder/Archiver — Spark-E II: Live + Record
The Spark-E II is a portable, compact (5.9 inches), and efficient single channel H.264 encoder and live streamer.  It encodes 3G SDI HD-SDI, HDMI, VGA, or SD Analog (YPbPr or CVBS) video and audio (one input channel at a time) to one H.264 standard stream, records it, and outputs it to an IP network.

The ARQ Link encoder features 3G-SDI, HD-SDI, or SDI input and IP output.  The matching decoder supports UDP input and converts the compressed digital video and audio into HD-SDI or SDI, or optional HDMI or ASI, output.  Encoding/decoding latency is 1.5 seconds.  The remotely manageable system supports resolutions up to 1080p50/60.  It also performs AES-128 encryption between units.

2.  Live/VOD Media Servers with Catch-up TV and Live Time Shift over HLS — Atlas Media Servers
The DVEO Atlas Media Server Family is a cost-efficient way for smaller telcos and cable operators to deliver live and on-demand multi-bitrate IPTV and OTT services. The multichannel systems ingest H.265 or H.264 live streams over IP, then “groom” the streams by adding wrappers such as MPEG-DASH, HLS, or RTMP, plus subtitles for closed captions or multiple languages.

All Atlas systems feature server side ad insertion with HLS – the server inserts pre-encoded ads based on a schedule or with SCTE markers, and dynamically targets ads to specific users based on their location. The systems also include Catch-up TV and live timeshift functionality (rewind/fast forward) over HLS.

Atlas Media Servers are available in three different configurations.

  1. Atlas Media Server III: TELCO streams live or VOD to up to 42,000 simultaneous users.
  2. Atlas Media Server II: TELCO streams live or VOD to up to 7,500 simultaneous users at one mbps.  It is being used for OTT television in a number of cities.
  3. Atlas Streaming Server I streams live content only to up to 1,000 simultaneous users.  Its compact size (7.5 inches) makes it suitable for streaming special events.

3.  Real Time Video Conferencing Appliance — Conf Box IP/DOZER
The Conf Box IP/DOZER is a tiny real time video conferencing appliance for cost effective video communications over poor or congested public or private internet connections.  Thanks to DOZER™ ARQ Automated Packet Recovery, this encoder/decoder unit will work over unconditioned lines such as the public internet.  It has been field tested in countries such as Bangladesh, Nigeria, South Korea, and Nigeria.

The Conf Box IP/DOZER ingests a single input — either one SDI/HD-SDI input (up to 1080p/60), or one HDMI input, or one GigE IP.  The IP output can be scaled to any resolution up to 1080i 60.  The system ships as two small encoder/decoder pairs with two inexpensive sample cameras.

The Conf Box IP/DOZER provides an end-to-end latency of 400 milliseconds.  It can also record and stream at the same time with the built-in 32GB solid state drive inside the unit or with any USB attached storage.

4.  Targeted Multistream Dynamic Ad Insertion and Delivery Platform — AD SPOTTER
The AD SPOTTER is DVEO’s new multi-criteria advertising platform that uses content and viewer information to make decisions about the actual ads played out to all viewers, to dynamically select ads to maximize revenue.  The AD SPOTTER generates SCTE-35 and cue tones with content type information, interprets SCTE-35 information and the viewer’s receiver data, and then seamlessly inserts user targeted ads into live or stored transport streams.  The system can also trigger “ad starts” via IP messaging, scheduled, or manual triggering.  The AD SPOTTER can also insert ads inside, overlaid, or around the video content via slices, overlays, crawl messages, alert bugs, and video squeezes.

5.  Compact Low Latency H.264 Encoder/Archiver — Spark-E II
The Spark-E II is a portable, compact (5.9 inches), and efficient single channel Linux®-based H.264 encoder, live streamer designed for encoding 3G-SDI/HD-SDI, analog, or HDMI input from cameras, or video content from analog sources.  It encodes this content to one H.264 standard stream, records it, and outputs it to an IP network.  The resulting stream can be viewed with standard transport stream compatible set-top boxes or software clients such as VideoLAN VLC or JW Player.  Operators can stream video content to YouTube® or Facebook®, or to CDNs and websites like Ustream®, Akamai®, Octoshape™, Verizon®, etc.  The IP video stream can also be simultaneously recorded onto a USB stick for archives or later playback.  The Spark-E II features a low latency of less than half a second.

Jitter is one of the causes of poor video quality.  PCR is the derived timing of all transport streams generated by the 27 MHz System Time Clock in encoders.  Many IP transport streams are asynchronous, which makes them prone to jitter if they are sent to PCR compliant devices.

Any device that supports HLS can use it, as the Atlas systems will dispatch a “live” playlist with a time specified by the user.  The systems support HLS Adaptive Bitrate streaming, to deliver high quality video.

“The Atlas Media Servers make it easy to stream IP video to many mobile devices at once,” commented Laszlo Zoltan, Vice President of DVEO.  “The servers store all video segments.  If needed, video content can be stored on an external network.  No storage is required on the viewer’s device.  The systems also feature a configurable buffer so operators can set the maximum time that playback can go back to.”

Operators can easily create all playlist types (live, VOD, time delayed, etc.) by using simple URL parameters.  The systems are also compatible with JW Player native Catch-up TV playlists.

Atlas Media Servers are designed for small to mid size deployments by telcos, schools, cruise ships, stadiums and hotels.  The systems ingest MPEG-2, H.264, and/or optional H.265/HEVC live streams over IP, then “groom” the streams by adding wrappers such as MPEG-DASH, HLS, or RTMP, plus subtitles for closed captions or multiple languages.  All content can be encrypted when communicating with a myriad of target devices.  Operators can also remove content encryption or pass it to viewers.

Atlas Media Servers are available in three different configurations.

  1. Atlas Media Server III: TELCO streams live or VOD to up to 42,000 simultaneous users.
  2. Atlas Media Server II: TELCO streams live or VOD to 5,000 to 8,000 simultaneous users.  It is being used for OTT television in a number of cities.

New technology companies join the rapidly growing TICO Alliance at NAB 2016

Las Vegas Convention Center – Blackmagic Design, B&M Modern Media, Bluefish444, Cobalt Digital, Ikegami, Leader, Net Insight, Panasonic, Pesa, Telestream and Village Island have joined the alliance in the last few weeks. The growth of supporters and promoters of TICO continues, as a further eleven international companies, opt for the TICO Alliance.

Current members have collaborated to create a full set of open specifications that will be disclosed in the SMPTE RDD35, specifying TICO compression, its mapping on SDI, SMPTE2022-6 and RTP payload. The specification suits the industry roadmap converging on SMPTE 2022-6, VSF TR03 and TR-04 for the transition to IP.

TICO technology benefits

TICO enables 4K live production by transmitting lightly compressed ultra-high definition 4K 60P video over a single 3G-SDI link, eliminating the common issues which professional broadcasters face either using multiple 3G-SDI ports or updating their infrastructure to 12G-SDI to manage 4K video throughput. Moreover, on the road transitioning to fully IP workflows, it also optimizes the transmission of UHDTV using a single 10GbE interface to carry up to 3 UHDTV 4K streams.

TICO is the optimal answer to the challenging requirements of Broadcasters for Live production environments: the ground breaking technology guarantees a visually lossless quality with only a few pixel lines of latency, is robust to multiple coding generation, has an extremely small footprint in FPGA so that firmware can easily be upgraded to support 4K in existing or new IP or SDI infrastructures.

NAB 2016 is the opportunity for visitors to see several demos at various booths of how TICO compression is transforming and facilitating the transport of video over SDI and IP networks for Live production. TICO adopters and promoters will be demonstrating real-life solutions and deployments of TICO, across multiple applications including UHD/4K over single 3G-SDI, SMPTE 2022-6 or VSF TR03. TICO enabled products are demonstrated at several booths, including Imagine Communications, Grass Valley, Panasonic, Deltacast, Bluefish444 and others.

NAB show will be the first chance to publicly see also joint demonstrations between equipment manufacturers. The interoperability is enabled by the use of the SMPTE RDD35. Panasonic, a new member of the Alliance, is showing a multi-vendor interop demo over 10GbE IP network – booth C3607. The demo is showing 4K/60p Video over IP with TICO and RDD35 implementation amongst three different equipment manufacturers.

The alliance is an open coalition of companies united to set the bar for next generation UHDTV infrastructure by establishing TICO compression in the new IP-based Live ecosystem. Leveraging the TICO compression with open standards and specifications, the group enables the industry to seamlessly update the existing SDI-based workflows to IP and UHDTV 4K without the cost of a complete renewal.
